Step 2 - Please Read and Sign

Member Code of Conduct

The Y expects members and guests to behave in a manner consistent with a family atmosphere. Inappropriate behavior, such as the use of foul language, fighting, and dangerous play are unacceptable and may result in the termination of your membership.
This code of conduct applies to everyone who uses the Summerville Family YMCA. It is also included in your Member Handbook.
I have read and agree to abide by the Member Code of Conduct.

1. I understand that the YMCA periodically reviews sex offender lists and/or reserves the right to check the list for members.
2. I understand the SFYMCA bank draft is continuous. If I wish to terminate or change my membership, I must give notice in person, 10 days prior to my bank draft date.
3. I understand that no refunds are given. It is my responsibility to check my monthly bank statement and report any corrections to the YMCA as soon as possible.
4. The YMCA Board of Directors may adjust the monthly membership dues at any time. I understand 30 days notice will be mailed to the last address I have given the YMCA.
5. If your check/ACH Draft is returned unpaid, it will be collected electronically and you will be assessed a minimum fee of $30.00 (or the maximum amount allowed by law). Check writer is also responsible for all other collection cards.
I will read through my Membership Handbook so that I will be aware of all policies and procedures associated with the YMCA and its facilities. (The Handbook can be found on the Y website: summervilleymca.org or the Front Desk has paper copies available for you.)

On behalf of myself (and/or my family), I agree with the YMCA policies and procedures and understand that my/our membership can be revoked without refund for exhibiting inappropriate behavior toward the YMCA staff and/or facilities.

Step 3 - Membership Policies

Guide to Your Membership
The YMCA is a membership organization. Most programs are open to non-members at program participant rates. Use of the facilities is reserved for members, program participants, and their guests.
The SFYMCA reserves the right to update our policies as necessary and without notice. The handbook is meant as a guideline, and exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Membership Services director, Wellness Center Director, and the Chief Executive Officer.

Membership Renewals
If a member renews membership within 60 days, they may be readmitted as a continuing member, but past membership dues must be paid to keep the membership continuous. If more than 30 days have elapsed, membership will be subject to joining fees.

Membership Responsibilities
Members, guests, and visitors expressly assume the risk of damage to property and harm or death to themselves. Accordingly, neither the SFYMCA or any of its agents, employees, or invitees shall be liable to the person or any of the persons' family, agents, employees, or invitees for any damage to persons or property when and to the extent that any such damage or injury may be caused, either proximately or remotely, wholly or in part, by any action or omission, whether negligence or not, of the SFYMCA, or any of its agents, employees, or invitees or due to the condition or design of any defect in the building, its mechanical system, or its equipment.

Refunds
The SFYMCA will refund any membership dues that are paid up front and not used.

Termination of Membership
Terminations are defined as follows:

  • Complete a termination form in person 10 days prior to cancellation.
  • Nonpayment of dues after 45 days
  • Suspension - temporary, due to violation of rules.
  • Expulsion - permanent due to violation of rules.

Membership privileges may be suspended or revoked by the Chief Executive Officer. The length of suspension or a refund of membership fees will also be determined at that time. A person whose membership has been suspended or revoked shall not be able to participate in any other SFYMCA program during the period of suspension or revocation.

Transferring Memberships
The SFYMCA will waive the joining fee of members transferring from other YMCAs. Verification of membership in good standing from the previous YMCA will be required.
Membership and its privileges shall not be transferred from one person to another.

  • Each guest of PM must provide valid ID and complete a Visitor Information Sheet (VIS).
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany teen guests (under 18) who have not completed our Teen Fitness & Safety Class.
  • Members can bring one guest per adult per visit. Guests must be 18 years old. Guest fee will apply.
  • After a one week trial visit (seven consecutive days to try out the Downtown and/or The Ponds facilities) by a PM, a person should join the YMCA to continue using the facilities and services. If they do not, they must follow the rules as a Guest and pay the $10 guest fee/day.

Guest and Potential Member Policy
Our guest policy is designed to protect the value of your membership.

  • Guests are non-YMCA members from outside SFYMCA service area (50+ miles). Potential members (PM) are non-YMCA members from SFYMCA service area who are considering joining SFYMCA.
  • Guests will be charged $10 fee per visit. They will be charged a $5 fee per visit if they are accompanied by a current member. The SFYMCA reserves the right to limit the number of guest visits.
  • Potential members are limited to seven consecutive visits. Subsequent visits will be subject to the $10 guest fee.

Children & Teens at the Wellness Center

  • 10 year olds can participate with their parent in Pilates, Yoga level one, Water Aerobics, and Spin classes as long as they are 4'10" tall

11-12 year olds

  • Must complete a Health History Questionnaire and a two-part Teen Safety and Fitness Test
When they enter the building to exercise, a clip-on tag will be provided (the tag will be verification to the Y staff that the tween has completed the training)
  • Tween may use cardio equipment and weight machines only when accompanied by their parent
  • Free weight use is not permitted

13-14 year olds

  • Teen can use cardio equipment with their parent before they complete the Teen Orientation
  • After completing a two-part Teen Safety and Fitness Test (if not taken when younger), a "Blue Band" will be provided, and worn when in the building, showing the Y staff that the member is at least 13 and has completed the training.
  • The Teen may then use cardio equipment and weight machines WITHOUT THEIR PARENT

15-17 year olds

  • Must complete a two-part Teen Safety Test, if not already taken when younger
  • Children over 6 attending specialized programming who need supervision should use the child watch restroom, or the restroom upstairs, in lieu of an opposite sex locker room
  • A parent or legal guardian must accompany teen guests (under 18) who have not completed our Teen Fitness & Safety Orientation.

Child Watch, Baby Room, and Tween Rooms are available to family members for a maximum of 2 hours per day per child. Our insurance policy states ONLY parent/legal guardian can sign children into Child Watch. Ask Child Watch staff for more information.

I have read and understand the above policies and I can go online to view our Member Handbook in its entirety.
