In honor of our military, we want to spotlight the Patton family and their generosity to the Summerville Family YMCA’s financial assistance program.

John K. Patton (pictured right) was a blessing and a shining example of the YMCA’s mission. Throughout his adult life, John was keenly aware of the importance of physical fitness. John served in the US Navy during the Korean War and later enrolled at the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry with financial assistance from the US Navy. John spent most of his career as a pediatric dentist, later concluding his career as a “jailhouse dentist” in Beaufort County Detention Center.

In his free time, he could often be seen along the roads and highways of Beaufort County cycling for miles. In his later years, he discovered the Beaufort YMCA was a much safer environment to enjoy cycling! Not only was he able to remain healthy and fit, he also developed many friendships with Y staff and members. The Beaufort Y staff remained very faithful to John after his move to Summerville in 2012, and the strength of their friendship lasted until his final days.

In his memory, a dear friend of the Y, made an extraordinary gesture in his name with a gift of $25,000. The gift provides financial assistance to over 300 military members, veterans, and their families seeking membership to the Summerville Family YMCA. In February 2016, The Summerville Y honored the Patton family by creating the Patton Family Fund.

The Patton Family Fund eases financial burdens for our brave heroes, and provides military families a positive place to find community, and enjoy health and wellness programs for the entire family. You can directly support our community’s courageous men and women with a meaningful gift to the Summerville Family YMCA’s Patton Family Fund in honor or memory of a service member in your life.
