More about the Tidalwaves
Who We Are
From first-time competitors to national-level athletes. The team competes in local YMCA swim leagues as well as South Carolina USA Swimming competitions, giving swimmers opportunities to grow and succeed at every stage of development.
Rooted in the mission of the Summerville Family YMCA, we believe competitive swimming is about more than medals. Through structured training and competition, swimmers build confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, and respect for others—skills that extend far beyond the pool.
Our team culture is grounded in the YMCA core values and a commitment to creating a safe, positive, and supportive environment. Athletes are encouraged to chase big goals, and recognize progress at every level. We believe that through structured training and competition, swimmers build confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, and respect for others – skills that extend far beyond the pool.
Making Waves
The 2025 season marked a major milestone for the Tidalwaves, showcasing the team’s continued growth and increasing competitiveness at the state and national levels. For the third consecutive year, the Tidalwaves were crowned YMCA South Carolina State Champions, and experienced our first-ever appearance at the USA Futures Swim Meet in Ocala, Florida—an important step forward as more swimmers qualify for elite-level competition.
At the SC USA Senior State Championships, the Boys 400 Freestyle Relay finished 2nd out of 25 teams, a dramatic improvement from not placing in 2023 and finishing 17th in 2024. On the national stage, the team placed 23rd out of 83 teams at the YMCA Long Course Nationals, rising from 58th the previous year.
One Tidalwaves swimmer placed 3rd in the nation in the 200 Freestyle and 2nd in the nation in the 400 Freestyle, while also qualifying for Speedo Winter Juniors, a significant accomplishment that highlights our push to be an increasingly competitive team at every level.
