What is Togetherhood?
Togetherhood® is the YMCA’s signature program in the area of Social Responsibility. This program provides members and the community with rewarding opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through volunteer projects that address the real needs of others.
Projects include supply drives for school supplies, Comfort Cases for Foster Children, building beds through A Place to Dream Bed Project, and more. We also give our time at the Lowcountry Food Bank, Sean Jenkins Children’s Hospital, and Dorchester Paws. Check out the calendar below for full details on volunteer opportunities.

The Bed Project
There are children in our community that don’t have a place to sleep each night. The Bed Project is a community service initiative dedicated to ensuring those children have a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Funds are raised to purchase beds and bedding for children in need, then we come together to assemble beds, helping improve children’s health, development, and overall well-being. One bed at a time.
Lowcountry Food Bank
Join us on the first Thursday of every month to help us serve our neighbors across 10 counties in coastal South Carolina. From sorting and packing to assisting with food drives and distributions, volunteers help provide nourishment to local children, seniors, and families facing food insecurity.
Coach Youth Sports
Every coach in our youth sports leagues is a volunteer, and without them stepping up, these programs simply wouldn’t be possible.
Coaching with the YMCA is about more than teaching the fundamentals of a sport. It’s about being a mentor, a role model, and a source of encouragement for kids as they grow in confidence, teamwork, and character.
Whether you’re an experienced athlete or just someone with a heart for helping youth, you’re welcome here. We provide all the training, resources, and support you’ll need to succeed.
Events
Throughout the year, the Summerville Family YMCA hosts community events that bring people together, celebrate traditions, and create lasting memories. Keeping these events running smoothly and growing them to meet the needs of our expanding community depends on the support and dedication of volunteers.
Volunteer opportunities are available at many of our signature events, including the Flowertown Festival, Halloween at the Y, Back to School Bash, Thanksgiving Feast, and the Shamrock Shuffle.
Give
Togetherhood® is about coming together to strengthen our community, and that doesn’t always mean volunteering time. Throughout the year, giving plays a vital role in supporting neighbors in need and expanding the reach of YMCA programs.
Through Togetherhood®, we coordinate donation drives that provide essential items to children, families, seniors, and community partners. These efforts include collecting school supplies for our Back-to-School Bash, basic necessities and clothing for foster children and seniors, holiday gifts through our Wishing Trees, and food and pet supply drives benefiting the Lowcountry Food Bank and Dorchester Paws.
Every donated item helps meet a real, immediate need.
