Health & Wellness

At The Summerville Family YMCA, we know that fitness involves more than working out. It’s about making good choices to live well inside and out. You’re not only supported by staff, but you’re also part of a community that helps you be your best self at every age.

Whether you’re looking to lose weight, get stronger, eat healthier, fight disease, improve your energy, or lower stress, we have the people and programs in place to help.

Wellness Orientation

The YMCA offers wellness floor orientations for our new and existing members. Orientations are hosted by YMCA wellness floor staff and include information on adjusting equipment to fit you, proper use of equipment and wellness floor etiquette.

KICK START

Take advantage of our unique KICK START series designed to help you develop a personalized fitness plan and drive results. Challenge yourself with fun workouts and bond with others who share your passion for pursuing a healthier lifestyle. Set goals, participate in learning sessions and work up a good sweat through a cardio workout and weight training.

Personal Training

YMCA Personal Training is a one-on-one session with a personal fitness coach. Our coaches are educated professionals with years of experience who can help any YMCA member including working professionals, new moms, seniors and triathletes.

PEAK Group Training

PEAK Group Training offers individualized coaching in a small group setting. Workouts are designed to increase calories, change your body composition and reach your goals. The classes, The YARD and SPARK, are offered at a variety of times at the Downtown and The Ponds family centers.

SilverSneakers

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, SilverSneakers offers a variety of options for all fitness levels and abilities. At the Y, your SilverSneakers benefits include use of our wellness centers, group fitness classes as well as social activities.

Blood Pressure Self Monitoring

The YMCA’s Blood Pressure Self Monitoring program is a way for participants to work with healthy heart ambassadors and self-monitor their blood pressure. The program goal is a reduction in blood pressure, better management, increased awareness of triggers that elevate blood pressure and better knowledge to develop healthier eating habits.

Walk With Ease

Walk with Ease is a 6 week program backed by the Arthritis Foundation that is designed to teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life. Using the aid of Myzone, our trained guides teach you to use feedback based on your individual effort to make sure you are exercising safely and effectively. The program includes a guidebook and a walking schedule to get you safely moving toward better health. The purchase of a Myzone belt is not included, but encouraged.

Diabetes Prevention Program

In the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a trained Lifestyle Coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small group environment and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity and behavior changes can help reduce their risk for diabetes and benefit their overall health. The Diabetes Prevention Program is a recognized program by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Livestrong At The YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is an evidence-based program for adult cancer survivors. Survivors participate in a health and fitness program with other survivors in a small group setting. Through the program, certified YMCA instructors help patients build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, while improving energy levels and self-esteem.
