POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Assistant Aquatics Director supports the Aquatics Director with administrative duties while also managing aquatics staff, aquatics programming, staff certifications, and swim team coaching. The scope of the position frequently requires working evenings and weekends, teaching swim lessons, coordinating family aquatics events, and fulfilling various roles within the aquatics department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide oversight of daily pool operations at the Wellness Center.
  2. Engage in active listening with members to build relationships, understand individual goals and interests, and take initiative to assist in achieving those goals.
  3. Assist in the management and staffing of the Y swim lesson program at the Wellness location, including registration procedures, parent handouts, program evaluations, and other related paperwork (80%–20%). This includes time spent on deck with parents, swim instructors, and/or lifeguards. Incorporate all five program components into each lesson: personal safety, water orientation/stroke development, water sports and games, rescue skills, and personal growth.
  4. Coordinate and oversee all lifeguard staff. Assist with lifeguard scheduling to ensure adequate pool coverage during operating hours. Orient new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities, and ensure all lifeguards maintain current training and certifications.
  5. Coordinate all aquatic rentals and birthday parties, including but not limited to serving as the point of contact for participants, registration, staffing, and lifeguard management.
  6. Coordinate all aquatic family events, including but not limited to planning, creating, and implementing new quality programming and existing events. Work closely with the Marketing Director to promote events and assist with registration, staffing, and lifeguard management.
  7. Teach CPR/AED, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), and other related courses for staff recertification and community safety. Assist with lifeguard training for staff and the community.
  8. This position requires approximately 12 hours of direct service (e.g., guarding, swim instruction, private lessons), 15 hours of direct coaching, and 12 hours of administrative work, with the understanding that hours may vary and are subject to change based on departmental needs.
  9. Maintain clear and consistent communication with all supervisors. Enforce pool rules and handle issues professionally as they arise. Attend all staff in-services. Provide coverage when needed and alternate being on call during weekends.
  10. Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOW-HOW:

  1. A minimum of two (2) years of aquatics experience is required. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire. Supervisory experience is required.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  3. Two (2) or more years of coaching experience at the club level for pre-competitive (ages 5–10) and age group swimmers (ages 7–14). Current USA Swimming Coach certification is preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
  4. Current American Red Cross and/or YMCA Lifeguarding certification required. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and/or YMCA Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred. If not instructor-certified, willingness to obtain certification within three (3) months of hire is required.
  5. Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification and/or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required. If not certified, willingness to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire is required.
  6. Enjoy working with children.
  7. Ability to use Microsoft Office software and standard office equipment. Willingness and ability to learn and use YMCA-specific software within 30 days of employment.
  8. Must possess a cooperative spirit and be committed to character development by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to staff, volunteers, YMCA members, program participants, and the public.
  9. High School Diploma – some college preferred.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must remain mentally alert to dangerous situations to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
  • Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment and rescue a 200-pound person.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for extended periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing a min of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position requires bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

POSITION FACTS:

The incumbent is responsible for adjusting their schedule as necessary to ensure proper administrative and programmatic functions. This position requires varied hours and shifts, including mornings, evenings, and weekends, with some shifts overlapping with the Aquatics Director. The incumbent will engage in active listening with members to build relationships, understand individual goals and interests, and take initiative to assist in achieving those goals.

The incumbent must maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals at all times, while maintaining clear and consistent communication with the Aquatics Director. A 30-day review will be conducted following the employee’s start date. This introductory period allows both the Summerville YMCA and the employee to assess mutual satisfaction and suitability for the position.
