Child Development

As a benefit for our members, our family centers offer complementary childcare for up to two hours per day while you workout or relax in our facilities. Children are welcome between the ages of six weeks to six years. Staff provide loving care for your little ones giving you peace of mind, giving your children a safe, fun place to play.

For your child’s first visit to our Child Development Center, please visit our Welcome Center to complete a registration form providing background information about your child. To sign your child up, please present the staff with your membership card. This way, we can identify you as the parent or guardian and ensure your child’s safety.

Little Learners Program

The Little Learners Program provides children with the opportunity to learn, laugh and play in a structured setting while growing socially, emotionally and intellectually. Children enjoy a warm atmosphere in which they have the opportunity to engage in themed activities throughout the day. The curriculum of the program includes High Scope Curriculum and YUSA Healthy Me Curriculum. Children also enjoy activities such as yoga, gymnastics, arts and crafts. The 3-5 year olds also go swimming and enjoy weekly field trips.

After School Care

At the Y, we believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our After school programs provide a fun, safe place for kids to learn, grow and thrive.

With a focus on safety, health, social growth and academic enrichment, Y After school Programs take place in a caring and encouraging environment at our family centers. We empower youth by providing programming that, in addition to giving them something to do, builds academic and creative abilities. And, our Inclusion programs allow children with special needs to participate in activities alongside their peers and create a mutual sense of belonging.

Kids Day Out

When school is out, camp is in! The Summerville Family YMCA offers Kids Day Out holiday day camp during no school days (following the Dorchester District 2 calendar). Children will make new friends and have fun in a safe and structured environment. All camp activities take place under the guidance of trained Summerville Family YMCA counselors, who embrace the values of our organization. Our holiday day camp program includes games, crafts, swimming and more for children ages 5 to 12. Come for one day of camp, or sign up for the whole week. Get ready for a day of summer camp during the school year!

Rainbows for All Children

Rainbows is a 13-week program designed to help students who may be struggling with difficult feelings, from the absence of a family member for any reason.

Here’s what happens in the Rainbows program:

  • Listening: through listening to one another, children learn that other families also experience change.
  • Sharing: through sharing with one another, children learn that there is help and comfort available and that healing can occur.
  • Helping: Through helping one another, children affirm their own abilities and goodness and enhance their own sense of self-esteem. Children come to understand that each change in life can be an opportunity for a new beginning and for growth

The children participate in arts & crafts activities, play games and support one another through shared experiences during difficult times.
